Safety, Theft, and Crashes

Find resources and information on bike safety, theft prevention, and how to report crashes to help make cycling in Cambridge safer for everyone.

Safety

While infrastructure improvements are the best way to ensure safer cycling in cities, it’s important to remember that we still need to take personal safety precautions as the bike network continues to be built out. The City of Cambridge has published a Street Code which has information about the rules and etiquette of the road. They have also published an extensive guide about tips for getting around safely on bike

Below are some brief tips for staying safe:

  • Stay Alert: Pay attention to your surroundings and always ride defensively to avoid accidents.
  • Be Visible: Use bike lights, reflectors, and wear bright clothing to improve visibility, especially at night.
  • Wear a Helmet: A properly fitted helmet helps protect your head in case of a fall or crash.
  • Follow the Rules: Obey all traffic laws, including signals, stop signs, and right-of-way rules.
  • Yield to Pedestrians: Slow down and give pedestrians the right of way, especially in crosswalks.
  • Avoid Blind Spots: Stay clear of large vehicle blind spots, particularly at intersections.
  • Avoid Door Zones: Ride far enough from parked cars to avoid being hit by opening doors.
  • Bike Maintenance: Regularly check your brakes, tires, and chain to ensure your bike is in good working order.

Theft

What to do when it’s stolen (taken from https://www.cambridgema.gov/cpd/communityresources/bicyclesafetyandregistration.aspx):

  • File a report with the Cambridge Police Department. You can file it by calling our non-emergency number at 617-349-3300 or we recommend reporting it in person at the Cambridge Police Department, which is located at 125 6th Street. Provide a serial number and pictures if you have them along with information about where it was stolen and any other details of the theft.
  • Post the bike as “Stolen” in bikes section of Craigslist or on social networks like Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. If you receive a tip or info, contact the police. Do not attempt to recover bike on your own.
  • File a claim with your renter or homeowner’s insurance company. Sometimes bike theft is covered.
  • If you think your bike may have been recovered and could be in the police department’s possession, please fill out this form with the Property & Evidence Unit, so we can determine if there is a possible match.

Crashes

If a less severe crash, you should still report it so that problem spots can be identified. You can always call the non-emergency police line at: 617-349-3300
